Imaging services

Imaging exams allow radiologists (imaging specialists) and physicians to view structures and activity within the body. This is vital for diagnosis but also for treatment, to ensure your care plan is working as it should.

Diagnostic imaging services in Fort Walton Beach, Florida

Our fast, accurate imaging services let your doctors diagnose your condition so you can begin the healing process as quickly as possible.

HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital offers a full range of inpatient and outpatient imaging services. Many of these services are also accredited by the American College of Radiology. This reflects our ability to offer you the advanced, specialized imaging care you deserve during both the diagnostic and treatment phases of your journey.

Our imaging services and treatments

We offer full-service diagnostic imaging exams and access to a team of physicians who use the results to customize your treatment plan.

Computerized tomography (CT)

CT scans use X-rays to produce cross-sectional views, also known as "slices," of soft tissue structures inside the body. These scans are used to diagnose conditions such as cancer, heart disease, stroke and chest pain.

Our 64-slice scanner captures high-quality images quickly, which means you don't have to spend too much time holding your breath. This is especially helpful for children, those who are older and people with respiratory conditions. Quicker exam times also mean less exposure to radiation.

Integrated CT and positron emission tomography (PET)

PET creates images of high metabolic activity in the body. We use an advanced system to perform PET and CT scans simultaneously. A PET scan reveals areas of abnormal activity, but the exact location is unknown. A CT scan precisely displays the body's anatomy but does not reveal the body's functional chemistry. Together, the integrated PET/CT scan allows physicians to view and pinpoint activity in 2D and 3D when diagnosing and treating cancer.

A PET/CT scan also provides early detection of recurring cancer, showing tumors that may be obscured by scar tissue from surgery or radiation therapy.

Digital X-ray

X-rays use small doses of radiation to create images of internal body structures. X-rays are used to view and identify conditions such as:

  • Bone fractures and joint injuries
  • Fluid in the lungs
  • Heart and blood vessel obstructions
  • Infections
  • Intestinal blockages
  • Tumors
Electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy

A traditional bronchoscopy examines the major air passages of the lungs through a thin, lighted tube called a bronchoscope. This allows the physician to evaluate the lungs and collect small tissue samples to diagnose lung disease and cancer.

We use advanced technology to perform electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy. This 3D "roadmap" of the lungs using the patient's CT scan provides earlier detection of lung cancer and lung disease, even before symptoms are evident. With early detection, patients benefit from enhanced treatment options. Doctors can also use this for patients who have or had cancer surgery, chemotherapy, poor lung function or radiation therapy.

Gastrointestinal imaging

Our physicians perform gastrointestinal procedures to better understand their patients' digestive health. These types of procedures can help our physicians understand exactly what is happening in all areas of your digestive tract.

Heart imaging

Through our cardiology program, we provide heart screening and imaging services to detect cardiovascular diseases in their earlier stages. Our team performs cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology studies, interventional vascular services and offers comprehensive treatment for heart arrhythmias.

Interventional radiology

Interventional radiology uses imaging modalities (such as CT and ultrasound) to guide minimally invasive procedures. This advanced computer system generates 3D images which result in improved visualization, diagnosis and treatment.

Some of the interventional radiology procedures we perform include:

  • Dialysis catheters for renal failure treatment
  • Discograms to identify pain-causing spinal discs
  • Embolizations to stop internal bleeding or unwanted blood flow
  • Fistulagrams to visualize a fistula for possible angioplasty, declotting or stenting
  • Inferior vena cava filters to prevent known blood clots from traveling to the heart and lungs
  • Kyphoplasty to stabilize vertebra after acute vertebral fractures
  • Nephrostomy tubes to drain fluid off of kidneys
  • Nephroureteral stents to provide a pathway from the kidney to the bladder
  • Peripherally inserted central catheter lines for venous access
  • Venogram mapping for possible fistula placement or cardiac bypass
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

MRI uses a powerful magnetic field — instead of radiation — to produce images of the body's internal structures. MRIs help physicians detect abnormalities that might be hidden by bone tissue with other imaging methods. Physicians also use MRIs to evaluate the functionality and structure of the heart and its valves.

Mammography

As part of our breast health services, we offer 3D mammography to find breast abnormalities and cancer. While this technology is similar to a conventional mammogram, it is proven to be more accurate.

A 3D mammogram captures multiple images of the breast from several angles, creating a multilayered breast image. The doctor can then review the breast tissue one layer at a time, which helps them make a more accurate diagnosis.

Nuclear medicine

Nuclear medicine imaging uses small amounts of radioactive substances to pinpoint activity within the body on a molecular level. This type of imaging allows physicians to measure biological processes in real time, which helps them detect abnormalities earlier than other imaging methods.

Ultrasound

Ultrasounds use high-frequency waves to create videos of soft tissue areas within the body. This imaging modality is also used to view and monitor the activity of unborn babies.

Ultrasounds can help diagnose an array of health conditions, including those affecting the cardiovascular system and gastrointestinal tract.

Our imaging location and hours
